Who Am I?

Here’s an email I received from a female reader:

I’ve read your blog and find that some of what you write really resonates with me. I am curious, though, as to who you are. I hope I’m not being nosy or pushy but I’ve looked through this blog and few others of your for any information on who you are, what your credentials might be, what you do, your back ground etc…

Are you just a regular gal?

Yep, just a regular gal, what I call a Professional Nobody. Although I’m a writer, I usually work under pseudonyms, a practice I find even more imperative now that I’m talking about my own sex life.

That said, I’ve also done a lot of research on this subject, both for some projects I’ve been paid to write and because of my own experience and concerns. As a result of writing about this and related subjects in various venues, I’ve also heard from a lot of women (and a surprising number of men). I figure that makes me something of an expert in the EXPERIENCE of married female sexuality, so that I can speak somewhat authoritatively about the way it FEELS from this end of the equation.

The thing is, I have printed some of your writings to show my hubby and I know he will want to know why he should take advice from you.

Why should he pay any attention to anything I say? Not because I’m any kind of scientific guru, certainly (although I do consult with scientists). No, the only reason he should take me seriously is because YOU do.

(For comments from the original blog on this post, including some discussion of how “questioning the source” can be part of an avoidance strategy, see my Page of the same name: Who Am I?)

Farewell to My Salon Blog

I found out yesterday that Salon will no longer host the WYW blog after December 31st. Even though I’m not actively updating it any more, WYW continues to get a lot of traffic from the search engines. I think we’ve generated a lot of useful information and have had some really fascinating discussions, so I want to Preserve that Legacy for Future Generations. (cough)

I’m going to be reposting virtually all the material that is apropos to the theme, and redirects from the old pages will guide visitors here rather than let them linger at the old blog. But I’m not going to be doing much talking or question answering any more. As I outlined a couple of years ago, I’ve been struggling with health issues (yes, I’m still on oxygen 24/7) and I also feel that I’ve said as much as I can on this subject. In the absence of that hoped-for book contract (alas!), it’s just not that important or fascinating to me any more.

Besides, I’ll confess, it was pretty depressing reading all those stories from men and women who were experiencing so much conflict, coldness and sadness in their marriages. I confess, I became burnt out; I didn’t want to hear any more of it.

Still, I have continued to get email on the subject of the blog, and although I’m not sure I’ll want to discuss any of it, I kept it all and may be moved to post some of it in the days to come. And I haven’t completely given up on the idea of a book, either, although it’s likely to be quite a lot different from what that agent and I discussed way back when.

Meanwhile, I’m just creating an archive here. Don’t expect new stuff.

Thanks so much to all the readers and commenters and emailers who contributed so much to the WYW blog at Salon. You were as important as I was in adding to the blog’s lifetime hit count, which (if we include the readers of the first Salon blog that I had to relaunch because of my own stupidity), eventually amounted to over 3/4 of a million! Amazing for a little backwater blog, huh?
